Coomera Rivers Playschool - a new concept in timber decking

In our latest project, we used our timber decking in an innovative new light, delivering a front desk with a difference at Coomera Rivers Playschool Early Learning Centre.

Timber decking is most often utilised for outdoor decking projects, but Gold-Coast based creative Danka from Danka Interiors said she devised this unique concept to blend seamlessly with the dark/contrasting tones of the centre’s interior, and explained how the timber desk fits into the wider interior design of the centre.

“The use of blue, grey and charcoal brick at the front of the centre set the palate for the entire project, and the timber front desk draws this colour scheme inside as well,” Danka said.

“I opted for a parquetry-style black vinyl for that first impression, and it was obvious we’d need blue glazed brick and timber to compliment the look and add warmth - the timber decking we used was selected for its natural and rustic feel.

“The rest of the interior was left rather simple due to the predominant use of the children's art – there are two large jungle-themed murals in the hallway which are rather impressive – the kids just love admiring them as they walk down the corridors.

“We also commissioned a large wallpaper mural of some of the children from the centre – past and present – parents and kids alike love seeing this when they first walk in through the reception.”

European Hardware director Michael said this was the first time he’d been involved in creating interior furniture from his decking products, but the idea was something that could be applied to a variety of projects.

“The front desk utilised our blue/grey merbau decking (Mount Panasse), which is traditionally used for just that – decking,” Michael said.

“This project has showcased there are endless uses for timber decking and flooring - from creating indoor/outdoor furniture, to feature walls or cladding internal and external surfaces (even oak-cladded bars!).

“I’ve previously used our IntraCountry Oak on a feature wall in the front entry of a penthouse apartment in the Pivotal complex in Southport.

“The eye-catching feature wall gives you just a hint of what’s to come as you enter the amazing penthouse, which offers a breathtaking 360 degree view of the Gold Coast, from the hinterland to the sea.

“Using flooring or decking creates a truly unique finish – a rustic yet clean, high quality end result that blends perfectly with interiors and exteriors.”

Danka said Coomera Rivers centre owner Bernadette is absolutely thrilled with the end result.

“The best part about working with Bernadette is her passion and drive – she leaves no stone unturned to ensure her centres look the best they possibly can and their functionality, aesthetics and quality are always of the highest standard.

“It's easy to get excited about working with Bernadette and her husband Gary because they really care about all their centres parents, children and of course staff.”

At European Hardware, we especially enjoy projects that allow us to deliver on a creative challenge. Watch out for our next indoor/outdoor flooring concept project – where we bring the outdoors in, and vice versa!
